BRAND HIGHLIGHT

IT'S ABOUT TIME.

HOW BREDA IS CREATING THEIR OWN SPACE IN THE WATCH INDUSTRY

Dallas-based watch company, BREDA, launched in 2009 with the aim to be independent, creative, and free to

express their unique point of view on watch design.  In light of our second pop-up collaboration with BREDA, we

spoke with Co-Founder Amir Meghani to get the latest on BREDA's bright future.

BROTHER-AND-SISTER FOUNDERS, AMIR AND SHABEENA MEGHANI

"WE MADE THE DECISION TO REBRAND AND SET OUR OWN PATH..."

HOW DID BREDA GET ITS START?

BREDA was started as a private label brand, which means we were making watches for retailers based on their design and price needs with a brand name behind it. After years of working with multiple retailers, we made the decision to rebrand and set our own path for BREDA. Focusing on design & principles that we could stand behind. It was amazing what we discovered in the years working with retailers that affected how we positioned BREDA in the watch space today.

WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND?

I am the third generation in the watch business - my grandfather started selling watch bands in India in the 1950s. My dad then started his own watch distribution company in the Middle East, which he closed down in the early 90s to move to America for a better opportunity for my family. After graduating from college, I immediately moved home to learn the watch business and I still continue to learn everyday.

A LOOK INSIDE THE BREDA DESIGN PROCESS AND OFFICE SPACE

"MINIMAL AND SIMPLISTIC DESIGN PRINCIPLES TO ME ARE TIMELESS."

WHAT WAS THE MOTIVE BEHIND THE BRAND?

The pillars of BREDA are founded on four things – creativity, community, simplicity in design, and accessibility. These are the core components of BREDA that inform all decisions. Minimal and simplistic design principles to me are timeless. The fair pricing comes down to my experience and meeting the desires of consumers today.

WHY DALLAS?

I grew up in Dallas and my family is in Dallas. At first, my plan was to learn as much as possible and move to New York. But after injecting myself into the Dallas creative and business community, I realized the potential that is here. Doing it in your home town -- it doesn’t get better than that.

WHAT IS THE DESIGN PROCESS LIKE FOR EACH COLLECTION?

For us, collection design doesn’t just start and stop. We are constantly exploring ideas, concepts, materials, shapes, and much more. Our collections are always breathing and evolving, innately we just know what’s next. We're inspired by design & creators that keeps things simple – art, architecture, fashion design, objects, creative workspaces and more. Our goal is to keep design simple, surprising, and clean.

THE BREDA STUDIO AND WORKSPACE

"THE BREDA STUDIO FUNCTIONS AS OUR BRAND'S DESIGN OFFICE COMBINED WITH A COLLABORATIVE WORKSPACE."

WHAT WAS THE IDEA BEHIND THE BREDA STUDIO?

The BREDA Studio functions as our brand’s design office and store combined with a collaborative workspace. Every watch is designed in our studio and it’s a space where local creators come together to explore ideas and showcase their work. We want to be a part of the Dallas creative community, so to us that means not only collaborating with them, but giving back to them as well.

WHAT IS NEXT FOR BREDA WATCHES?

We are working with a Brooklyn-based designer on a concept for our retailers this holiday.  It's always exciting to collaborate with talented creators.  Also, next year we are expanding the collection by exploring functional watches. It’s been challenging to work with more sophisticated movements in our simplistic designs, but we have been able to find a balance and we can’t wait to share it soon.

WHAT CHALLENGES HAS BREDA FACED IN ITS EARLY YEARS?

Product quality-that was a really tough year for the brand. We were reliant on a few main accounts, so when we lost one of them it put us on our heels. There were also design inconsistencies that made it a challenge to market and set ourselves apart. We had to ask ourselves, "What do we stand for?"

We are constantly learning and weaving through challenges. It’s important to know there is always a solution, and challenges are simply growing pains to a clearer path.
