OUR SECOND ANNIVERSARY
LOOKING BACK ON OUR FIRST TWO YEARS
NOTES FROM MORGAN
INSTALLING THE SIGN AT THE DALLAS STORE, 2015
"IT'S BEEN TWO YEARS SINCE WE RANG OUR FIRST
TRANSACTION AT OUR FIRST STORE."
It is a day that I will absolutely never forget. Anyone who knows me has probably heard this story too many times. But August 10th, 2015 was memorable in every way possible. I remember sending a text to the Dallas team the night before and telling them to prepare for the next day because it was going to be a long one. We had a small preview party scheduled at 6pm opening night, and at noon, there were no clothes in the store, there were no fewer than fifteen contractors scrambling to finish, and our Internet was not working. But, as true grit will allow you to do, we pulled it off. The store looked great for the party, and they didn't even see us sweat. It was a true 'HGTV' moment.
Part of me says, "How has it been two years?" and another part of me says that it has felt like ten. There have been so many ups and downs over the two years. I often tell the team that I worry that I didn't warn them that joining The Mill team not only was a commitment of work and hours but of emotion. It is emotional to create something and see it through.
I feel like Mill No.3 has really come into its own over the past few months, and we are entering our third year in a great stride. This past year has been marked by several milestones and highlights (see below). And I know that next year has just as many, if not more, in store (pun intended)!
I want to say a huge thank you to all of our customers. I do not take it for granted that you shop with us. You know when you're on a plane and they say, "We know you have a choice of airlines when you fly, so thank you for choosing us"? Well, ditto. But I really, really mean it. For us, every transaction and every customer matters.

WINNING PAPERCITY'S 'BEST RETAIL DESIGN' AWARD
I am obviously proud of the design of our stores, but I never expected to win an award for it. Our intern, Taylor Dawson (we call her Dawson), on her own volition entered pictures of our Dallas store into the Dallas PaperCity Design Awards. Of course we didn't think we would win, as the competition was stiff. My best Pinterest and shopping skills were up against the best architects and design firms in Dallas. But the week of the ceremony, we got a call from PaperCity telling us that it was very important that we attend. Obviously we took this as a great sign! But surely we would only be the runner-up...right?
Well, the ceremony arrives, and I'm sitting in the crowd sipping a gin and tonic. There really was no reason to be nervous, but I was nervous! When it came time to announce the award for Best Retail Design, they called runner-up, Staffelbach, and winner, Mill No.3. It's kind of laughable to think that we somehow edged out Staffelbach. But we'll take it.
Another gin and tonic please!

FIRST ONLINE TRANSACTION
Anyone who says having an e-commerce site is easy is wrong. It is tough. Taylor, our photographer, and I spent many late nights at the office watching YouTube tutorials, perfecting the design, and then perfecting it again. The office security guard would check on us repeatedly after dark to make sure we were okay. But hey, great things take great work. And it sure felt great to see our first online order come through from one of our favorite customers, Naomi Fogel, just hours after the new website launched.
We believe that our website is an important addition to the shopping experience. Even if you don't buy anything online, the website has allowed our customers to check in on what is going on in the store and what new inventory we have received. That's why we encourage all of our customers to take advantage of the online store. (Warning: shameless plug!) Orders ship free and you can return anything directly to either store location!

OPENING OUR SECOND STORE
We joyfully ripped the brown craft paper off the storefront windows right at the deadline on May 28th. The fact that we were open was nothing short of a miracle, but that's a story for another blog post. Construction is never a pretty process, but it was a beautiful thing to look out the windows at our new store and see the beautiful Domain NORTHSIDE.
I am so proud to have a store amongst so many great neighbors. Filson, Bonobos, Paige, Warby Parker…Mill No.3. We are the new kid on the block, and I love it!
Having multiple stores opens up a whole world of opportunities for both us and our customers. If we do not have your size in Dallas, we can ship it to you from Austin. If you live in Dallas but have friends in Austin, you can now send them to Domain NORTHSIDE to share in The Mill experience.
Excitedly, Austin is only the beginning of our expansion. We are opening in Fort Worth at the end of 2017...and more locations are already in the works!

GROWING THE MILL FAMILY
In our second year, we welcomed nine new faces to the family! We added Molly, Kristin, Sammi, Michael, Jasmin, Halle, Sarah, Tiara, and Dawson.
And within our growing family, there have been a lot of things to celebrate. In our second year, we celebrated two weddings. The Mill family did our best to put the boys to the test before giving our approval. One painted all of the wooden hanger beads that we use in the stores. The other was our first reinforcement call on opening day in Dallas. I am sure he steamed clothes and mopped floors - all the things that most men love to do. Needless to say, they both passed.
Last, but definitely not least, we will have two baby 'Mill'ers' joining us later in 2017. So while wedding chatter marked 2016 conversation, 2017 so far has been about pickles, ginger, and elastic waistbands.
